Blade Runner 2049
now finally after waiting for years, Blade Runner is released. I dont think it will rake in billions of bucks like Disney's product as its not tailored for general audiences. What i loved the most are the way its handled, its like a visiting the mecca, the sistine chapel or seeing back the re-furbished Last Supper fresco.
The story is brilliant, languid and takes time organically, it lets audience to settle in as they are so used to montages, fast cut, Fast Five set pieces, Bayhem explosions and instant noodles.
Anyway - here are the plot.
a) replicants ( A.I ) able to reproduce - its a big thing. For the replicants, it's a miracle and they hide it coz the world will go bonkers if they know that robots able to bear a baby.
b ) Rachael died giving birth, so Deckard and company need to hide the baby. Due to this, they manipulated records stating that Racheal bears twins ( a boy and a girl ) instead - made Officer K ( Ryan Gosling ) confused and thought he is Deckard's real son ( due to his implanted memories ) courtesy of Deckard's daughter who is a master memory implant designer.
talking about Deckard's daugher - she grew up in scrapyard, meant to escape to an off world colony but she have auto immune deficiency so she lives isolated in her lab/chamber.
b) is Deckard still a replicant or a human being. This is the question that lingers until today and the sequel naughtily tease us further....Officer K ( a full replicant ) smashes thru the wall, while Deckard here aged and used the door - fucker!!!
The film-makers invest quality time to invest how Officer K a.k.a Joe to establish ways of trying to be human by establishing sort of connection with his virtual servant/lover/wife intelligence named Joi and yes failed his replicant test as the plot goes further.
they shouldnt show the Ghost ( Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore/Whoopi ) even though....the efforts are commendable but its just not necessary...
c ) why on earth Jared Leto ( Wallace ) didnt know that he hired Deckard's daughter and then informing us with Deckard that Tyrell had something on his sleeve when he introduce Rachael to Deckard in the first place. So that mean that everything is pre-calculated? Programmed to test if they can re-produce?
reminds me of the Architect quotes in Matrix revolutions.
Neo in the Matrix is an anomaly, where The Architect said that everything is pre-calculated.
The Architect: There are two doors. The door to your right leads to the Source and the salvation of Zion. The door to your left leads back to the Matrix, to her... and to the end of your species. As you adequately put, the problem is choice. But we already know what you are going to do, don't we? Already I can see the chain reaction: the chemical precursors that signal the onset of an emotion, designed specifically to overwhelm logic and reason. An emotion that is already blinding you to the simple and obvious truth: she is going to die and there is nothing you can do to stop it.
- when it comes to sci-fi narrative, shit will hit the fan when there are emotions involved.
Talking about Deckard if he is a Replicant - here is a portion of Collider's interview with Jared Leto.
what i love here is the film-makers respect the audience and knows who will be watching it, rather than spend a freaking portion of the film to explain, justify everything to what is happening. The sequel caters to the fans only.
Yes - the visuals ( courtesy of Deakins ) and production values invested upon elevated this film to a whole new level. Like i said - a glorified, 10K restored version of the Sistine Chapel. Its worth the admission ticket/pop corn and coke/parking ticket.
Its interesting to have cinema to have quiet moments, courtesy of Quaron's Gravity, Nolan's Dunkirk and now this - Blade Runner, a sombre - moody melancholic artefact. Again - trust me - its not something where you bring others to see this - i may sound selfish - but Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 is something that you savour alone as fan, consume all by yourself - individually - in peace and tranquility.

- Ridley Scott stated that Deckard is a replicant.

Totally. So when you were growing up and even now, when you watched the original Blade Runner, do you consider Harrison a replicant or do you like the not knowing?
LETO: Well there’s this scene where I look into his mind, right? I don’t know if it’s in the movie anymore. But Denis told me, I said, “Denis, what do I see?” And it’s like a long pause, he walked away a few paces and he comes back and he says, “This is your decision to make. You decide whether he is a replicant or not,” so in some way, I’m the one that has the secret now.
Well you see I gotta be honest, when I watched the film and obviously we’re getting into spoilers but whatever, I took away that is he fucking with Deckard basically saying, “Are you a replicant? Was this all predetermined? Was this what Tyrell wanted or is he just sort of trying to get in his head?”
LETO: Yeah, I mean you could take it even as a step further and maybe there was no first Blade Runner. Maybe those are implanted memories.
