Chow Sing Chi

I really miss Stephen Chow, especially when Chinese New Year around the corner. Before that Jackie Chan ruled the cinema with his non-stop action flick, then the throne was passed to Stephen Chow and he doesnt look back.

His brand of comedy was dubbed as Mo Lei Tau meaning silly ( doesnt have any sense at all ), his comic timing and set-up was so hilarious until we memorized and play the scene all over again in my head.In order to move on from the tragic Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and the subsequent tensions Hong Kong films churned out Mo Lai Tau comedies. Most of them falls flat as Stephen Chow ruled them all.

Just like those manga cartoons where the characters cant stand with the other characters, unable to with-stand their idiocy, their nose will bleed or simply faint. Not all his films are great as they are not consistent.

Here is my top 5 Stephen Chow's films. Based on my criteria, these films are chosen based on the plot strength, secondary supporting characters who add so much of colors and unpredictable chapters which made me glued to the end. Stephen Chow will tag team with another fellow actor named Ng Man Tat which his presence was absent in Stephen's masterpiece Kung Fu Hustle.

Even though his filmography is long and impressive, i have filtered out the 5 of the very best of his works.

No 1 - Kung Fu Hustle ( 2004 ) - his masterpiece. No flaws detected.

No 2 - Forbidden City Cop ( 1996 ) - where he played the brainy Emperor Guard - check out the classic magnet battle during an UFO convention and of course Carina Lau.

No 3 - God Of Cookery ( 1996 )

No 4 - Journey to the West - Chinese Pandora's Box Part 1 and 2 - in 1995 he played the Monkey God. This impressive 2 part was released back to back making audience filled up the cinema for 2 consecutive days making it memorable. Most audience will scratch their head after the first viewing as Its complex  and wide narrative requires you to re-watched it closely. The Bayi Bolomi's turning back the time sequence is a damn classic and of course when you have the monk singing Only You made it a real classic.

Part 2's ending is a real tear jerker.

No 5 - Flirting Scholar, Hail The Judge and Royal Tramp 1 and 2, Shaolin Soccer.
Category 5 here is run of the mill, passable works. They do have memorable scenes but it doesnt have consistency leaving me ( audience wanting more ).

Thank you for giving me those memorable days Stephen Chow.
