Producer Konon.....

INT : Day
Someone passed me his name card and proceeded to introduced himself.
A producer….a “film producer”, but after 15 minutes, he didn’t produced anything and in fact, he is a former production crew. So a from a production crew to a producer…that is an ambitious jump.

As usual I don’t have a card
“ so what you want bro?”

“ bro – boleh kasi advice sikit – I heard that you are in the film industry too”
“panjang cerita – just wait some time for me get in the mood to explain in a short essay” its an overview…so if you want to know where you stand, read it ok.

how to call yourself an industry when the industry is funded by the ruling government. An industry need to separate itself from the any government of the day, standing independently from any ruling government of the day and have it's own web of marketing schematics.

Its interesting to note to many so called producers complaining ( predictable ) that they needed funds to kickstart their production, most projects funded by FINAS ( as their responsibility to "develop" film ) fell drastically short as they unable to deliver. In other words, the film itself is a total crap instead of a becoming a promising investing brand.

Most local film failed even recoup their investment –When you invest your money – you need to get 100 - 150% or even 15% from your investment.

Simple maths.

Take a look at The Minions -  Minions grossed $336 million in North America and $823.4 million in other territories for a worldwide total of over $1.159 billion. The Hangover, that was made for a reported $35 million and went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated comedy in 2009. Its worldwide gross stood at $480 million on February 3, 2012.

when your film turned to be a global brand
Knowing where to sell your products – every producers must know how to market and most importantly sell their film, extending their life shelves by turning it to other forms of media to recop every cents and dollars to their investments.

In Hollywood, every deal inked is to ensure the longevity of the film, multiple rights, law legal rights from merchandising’s, books and toys and to whatever you can think of.

George Lucas literally funded his own production of Star Wars 1,2 and 3 thru his merchandising profits before selling it to Disney for billions.
Imagine that someone wants to re-make your film, selling it to their country….the opportunities are endless.

Raid The Redemption is going for an American re-make
Think Local.

Again – we need a web of inter-connectivity to ensure your products benefit to the many. Put it simply we have 31.52 Malaysians ( 2017 ) currently. So when people said their film bombed….i can be confused. When questions thrown to the local producers, they will simply point their fingers to FINAS " again "

Upin and Ipin
Its interesting to note that the animation industry here are different, they know where to sell and release their products and capitalizing on every opportunities they have. Most importantly – they hire more animators and generate a pretty cool downstream income.

Matt Reeve's Batman
Take a look at Warner Brothers who owned DC, why we have so many Batman reboot all over the years, they kept on re-inventing the wheel, from comic books, animations and films. All of them are separate entities on their own but they benefit from one another.

Same thing with Sony who owns part of Spider Man's rights - so we can expect more versions from them.

Not here.

Excuses, excuses and endless excuses. Film crews are not getting paid, this and that. Producer buying a new car instead of pumping his money to the production, lame whimpy grumbles and list goes on and on. The need of creative workers needed associations to take care of their benefits... It is so much until I got sick of reading and listening to their limitless verbal frowning and vomits.

They should have a persatuan of excuses.

So who is FINAS?
The Governing Body – National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Malay: Perbadanan Kemajuan Filem Nasional), abbreviated FINAS, is the central government agency for the film industry of Malaysia, similar to the Motion Picture Association of America in the United States.

Lets take a look at their organization objectives:

Uplift, Nurture and Facilitate the Development of Malaysian Film Industry
Catalysing Domestic Growth of Malaysian Film Industry and its International Visibility

These are their missions -

  • Positioning Malaysia as Privileged Destination for National and International Productions
  • Escalating Film Industry Services and Facilities
  • Solidifying Talent Development with Requisite Skills and Competencies
  • Elevating the Support and Encouraging the Spirit of Loving Malaysian Films
Lets head back to other countries, each production studios are giants and most importantly doesn’t beg to their governments for funding. They do their funding. Take a look on how Amazon and how Apple from producing handphones to a company that produces their own streaming content.

Yes take a look at how Disney own at least half of what the world is consuming.

Netflix literally spend 14.6 billions of dollars to make sure their engines running. And now they are looking for avenues to expand their brand unto something else...

Lets take a look at our own cinema chain we have currently:

Malaysia has 169 cinemas operating throughout the country. The only states without cinemas are Perlis and Kelantan. The largest cinema operator is Golden Screen Cinemas. There are other large operators such as TGV Cinemas, MBO Cinemas, Lotus Five Star and mmCineplexes.

Now don’t get me wrong – if a cinema chain pick up your product, they will have a say on when to release it couple with sales percentage commissions. Imagine the operator need to spend 1 and half hour with only 3 people in the hall, it’s a waste. At least they need to fill half of the seats in every screening.

Buying a ticket now is not cheap too ok. But cinema chain’s highest profitable merchandising are their drinks and popcorn.

Transformers pulled the numbers strongly after 6 months, it’s unbelievable.  Now streaming giants coming in, Netflix and Amazon’s now throwing so much money by creating more original content, signing film stars everywhere and most importantly offering us out of the world content, we need to double check –

on why and what we able to give to audiences.
on the support systems on how we can benefit to one another

Enough of attending crap seminars and whatever conference. Things will be better if we take our time understanding our stuffs. Yes you can call yourself whatever you want, be so high and mighty, on how intelligent and good your product are – in the end of the day, you simply need to sell and put food on the table.

It would be awesome to help others to bring more food on the table too ok.
