Of Pigs and Men
while all images of pigs is conspicuously missing from all Chinese New Year celebration as the animal is considered haram, there is no issue - we still move on. The beauty of Malaysia where we took in every considerate moves to accommodate others with sensitivity and thoughtfulness. This is how we develop our nation to another level, celebrate the multi-textual elements of Malaysia.
With the loyal awesome dog leaving us - enter the pig for this coming Lunar New Year for the Chinese. I will make a point to watch again the seminal classic 1995 - 2 part Chinese Odyssey starring the one and only Stephen Chow. Stephen changed his direction unto re-contextualizing and a revisionist towards the old China fables and tales, thru Forbidden City Cop and Flirty Scholar.
Chinese Odyssey is like a wine which turned from good to excellent as time goes by. Here, Monkey King was reborn as a human, attached to his worldly desires and soon he has to accept his destiny rather than the challenge to lead and support a monk to India to collect the scroll.
The ending sequence of the second part is bittersweet and heartbreaking. I aint spoil for you guys. Please watch.
Under Taoism - The Monkey King is one of the most powerful devil turned - promoted to a Taoism deity. Due to his immense talents and considerable temper, he flew up to the heavens to challenge the traditional hierarchy under the rule of the Jade Emperor. His episodes of causing ruckus, drama is hilarious until he was sentenced by Lord Buddha and forgiven and given an assignment by Goddess of Mercy.
Under Hinduism - we also have the Hanuman, who pledge loyalty to Rama, fighting Ravana to rescue Sita.
On the right is Zhu Bajie or better known as "Pigsy" or "Pig".
Zhu Bajie is a complex and developed character in the novel. He looks like a terrible monster, part human and part pig, who often gets himself and his companions into trouble through his laziness, gluttony, and propensity for lusting after pretty women. He is jealous of Sun Wukong and always tries to bring him down.
So thank you Dog, you are well and awesome, so come let see other celebrated pigs.
Happy Chinese New Year folks.
