Island In The Sun
The Asian region is one long buffet table meal, everything is produced from the same ingredients which made the Europeans sailed the waves to get spices, cinnamons, pepper and whatever that made their dishes look and smell better. One of those benefit when we have only torrentous rain and punishing sun all over the year.
Now add durian and haze to make it 4 season.
Inter - Cross boundaries, jumping one place to another to find better avenues,where Myanmar's cooking Wan Tan Mee, the Indonesians no longer being a maid, but as a spouse, going greener greens is easy, inter-marriages turned cool - hip, culture is fused together, works wonderfully - differential only to accents, slangs and terminologies.
Singapore - The glorified hotel lobby, the place where chewing gum is banned and if you are a smoker, you are subjected and treated like a prisoner while at the same time contribute to all nation's GDP.
The well connected - clockwork island where they imported water from us, transplanted and re-owned back whatever we dont give a damn, which is our rich culture ( The Peranakan's ) and now forest - notoriously our inexpensive delicious street food namely chicken rice and now CNN putting a crown jewel by publishing cendol as theirs. When we are busy clearing out lands, making the Orang Asli organizing blockade for more D24, Singapore decided to re-plant the whole man made spot to make it a tropical paradise, like a well oiled production company from Hollywood - Mandai will bring whatever rare- extinct animal species, hiring multi talented Filipinos as musicians to act like Orang Asli - all for the sake of entertainment.
In the end, Singapore will be like a well curated air conditioned museum, the place where everyone feel safe and sound, where we look back at our roots, origin and whatever we lost. Not bad eh for an island who have nothing years ago. Feel free to hum this Weezer's classic.
