watching, reading and appreciating a film is tricky, MIND YOU - its separate 3 different entity. The director of photography is responsible to design the visuals and realize the director's vision.
Its all bout
SHOW - DONT TELL.
just mute the volume and see how and where the visuals lead you.
The experience is like you standing in front of the huge painting. It doesnt swallow you, but welcoming, entice you. A participative process. I still remember i almost threw up when i watched Hunger Games. That DOP is a big shitty turd.
Most of the time in my film classes, students are encouraged to view, gaze and contemplate on selective image chosen weekly. Such as Andrew Wyeth's Christina's World.
you cant go wrong with any Carravagio's chiaroscuro work. Again, being selective, knowing what you want is a rewarding process/catharsis.
again, it takes tremendous effort to be subtle, thoughtful and sensible to be simple ok.
You simply cant go wrong with Chivo ( Emmanuel Lubezki ) , Hoyte Van Hoytema ( who shot Spike Jonze's Her and Dunkirk ) and finally Roger Deakins. Anyway here is few of my favorite stills from Deakins. Mind you, if i blew it up, mount it on a frame, people will think its a painting.

when your production budget can fund any third world country, you can create your own universe. Skyfall is one of them, Black Panther tried to replicate this sequence.
