How to resurrect something new? How to get away from the legendary Robin Williams's shadow? Let expand the Jumanji's world where Robin ( Alan Parrish ) stucked for years. The 1995 film was brilliant and also Zathura a spiritual successor released in 2005 is pretty fun. ( directed by Jon Fevreau )

after film-makers set both film in the real world and in space. Jumanji 2 goes into the jungle. Maybe that is the reason why have Guns N Roses Welcome to the Jungle in the trailers? I dont have any complaints. Seminal 70's and classic 80's rock tracks all of sudden got new life - Led Zep turned more mythical and cooler in Thor Ragnarok.
we have typical 4 high archetype high - school students Nerdy Spencer, the football Jock, the self absorbed pretty Bethany and the loner Martha, all of them got unto detention class ala Breakfast Club , forced to clean the basement and voila.....found Jumanji. This time the game itself reinvent to a 16 bit Nintendo complete with 4 player mode.
In Jumanji game - world, we have a jaguar mountain, bad guy stole the jaguar's eye ( in the form of diamond ) resulting - Jumanji turned darker. So its up for these high school kids with their chosen avatar to rescue it and exit from the game. Everything comes with a price as all of them have only 3 lives from start to finish.
With archetypal school kids now playing someone else, just like in any superhero films, the learning curve is drastic plus extreme differences added in the mix making it hilarious. What is excellent is Our macho Rock is the first who RUNS away from any battles ( even though he dont have any weakness ), Jack Black is an instagram Madonna, Kevin Hart who cant eat cake as it will make him explode and finally the hot Karen Gillen ( Nebula from Guardians of the Galaxy and companion to the 11th Doctor ) as Lara Croft who dances to the wonderful 1994 remix of Big Mountain's Baby I love your way. ( this track made its appearance in the brilliant Reality Bites soundtrack )
my stomach hurts when Kevin Hart shouted at the guy who kept saying the lines "get your ratioooon"
It sounds alot right?
Like standing in a multi-cultural, regional, asia pacific buffet.
There is so much deconstruction and contructivist pop culture elements working here. Layers and layers of meta narratives. Hold on What the hell is meta-narrative?

I found myself enjoying Jumanji every bit, every inch - just like being in a pasar malan or in Jonker Street where you can see tons of stores selling miscellaneous stuffs kain sarong, plastic toys,ice cream potong and whetever you can imagine.
and yes what is important - they dont take themselves too seriously. So its fun seeing this as our real world now is filled with so many people who can get offended too easily, pretending, trying so hard to be what they are not.
Jake Kasdan put something that connects the first Jumanji and the sequel, no - not Alan Parrish's hut but this guy. The slow Rhino in the first Jumanji
here we can see how those Rhino's turned deadly in the sequel.
