Night of the Demon



Nusantara : The Demon of the Night is a comic book by Firdaus Baharuddin, published by Mambang Studio and Annasis Mirror.

Our Southeast Asia region especially Malaysia is full of with many local mythologies and epic stories but when HR Giger's Xenomorph makes a pit stop here, this book got my full attention.



I always joked with few of my pals what if Hang Tuah stopped halfway on his quest to see Puteri Gunung Ledang to battle the reggae haired hunter Predator? It would be cool right?

Firdaus's comic book somehow made my mamak joke unto a reality.

like James Cameron's Aliens - The story starts with a warrior who have a regular small sweet little girl who likes to pay him a visit - Then  - all of a sudden went missing for ( almost a year )....due to this - the warrior wonder, curious what happened to her....his attention, care for this sweet kid led him to his worst nightmare.


Firdaus excellent visual command engaged me to the very end ( to the very last page ). Just like Mike Mignola's pencils in one of those Hellboy issues....thoughtfully composed simple lines and inked - most importantly no whining, endless boring monologues, complex back story here, the story is plain mano - to mano just like how Arnold goes all out to battle the Predator.

what is lovely here is Taming Sari and the traditional weapon kerambit is featured.......
trust me - crafting a simple story is not EASY ok!!! 


I just hope the warrior able to find her just like how Ripley managed to rescue Newt....

this book deserves a mention and a thumbs up too.

The Final Lesson by Syed Ahmad Jamal

Intro This is will be a long note - edited again thoroughly. Before i begin, this writing will touch on an individual goes by the name of  Syed Ahmad Jamal ( our National Laureate ) who passed away on 2011 and DBKL - stands for Kuala Lumpur Municipal Council. My heart dropped when Syed Ahmad Jamal public sculpture entitled Puncak Purnama ( Lunar Peaks, 1986 ) was destroyed by the local KL municipal council DBKL few days back. DBKL stands for Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur - actually is quite notorious for a list of bad PR moves by cutting off trees, blocking the Pertiwi Soup Kitchen ( which been feeding the homeless ), their zealous traffic summons - but seriously they broke the camel's back by destroying the modernist, geometrical - clean cut sculpture. The Battle of Non Permission This sculpture was highlighted in  2010 as "someone" decided to pimp it up, changing it's appearance without Syed Ahmad Jamal's permission.This is how it looks like......
