Art? What Art?
My dearest padawans ( artist in the making ), this note is simply a reminder, use it well and accordingly ok.
First of all - you guys have another 2 more semesters to graduate, therefore you guys are not full time artist. When you guys choose Fine Art as a major -
1. you are subjected to many classes in order to understand, expose and train your skills, your visual language and vocabs and most importantly to identify what you LIKE and what you dont LIKE. In the end of the day, your understanding and application of what you have learned is important.
2. You guys took almost 3 years to obtain your diploma, so that sets you apart from all these "amateur" artist wannabe - and the ones who think that they are an artist but they are working as a banker, a secretary who doodles in their past time. That is a big difference ok.
The need of sketches, drawings and notes
Its vital for you guys to have a diary or a sketchbook of sorts where you can keep all the thoughts, ideations, scribbles of your ideas. It sounds like a lot of work, but you can see it back after 10 years and see where you are standing. Again - all ideas needed to be treated and go unto a set of process.
Treatment of your ideas.
revert to the 5W and 1H.
Does the idea and questions regarding to your ideas clear?
Does the material, skills you choose and you have is good enough to convince audience?
Question - I want to paint whatever i want!!!
This is a normal question, of course everyone want to do this. First of all, you guys havent graduated yet and not a FULL TIME artist. Therefore you are subjected to supervisions and assessment criterias. Your client is your lecturer.
After you guys graduated from the college, by all means - you guys can paint whatever you want. But again,if you choose to be a Full Time artist and if a gallery likes you - you will be subjected to their standards and mind you, being an artist have BILLS to pay too ok. Remember that. ( critics, curators and writers are paid by the galleries to ensure audience understand your work. )
I wish all of you well, good and awesome. This is the best time to do mistakes as it's not costly when you guys graduated ok.
