Conversations with Dad
dad hospitalized due to shortness of breath.
Scene 1 - INT - hospital room, daylight.
Me - dad, when you are admitted yesterday, doc said you have shortness of breath....
Dad - if im not breathing, im NOT here NOW....
Scene 2.
Doc - uncle, have you been smoking?
dad pulled up his blankets and couldn't give an inch of shit of what the doc said...
Me - he's been smoking before you even born.
cmon man, we are talking to a 85 year old, retired from the army at 44, who spend his teenage years bitch slapping the communists, stationed in the East Malaysia during Indonesian confrontation in the 60's and be in the first battalion to Congo, send by the UN.
Flashback to 3 years back, dad was hospitalized due to prostate, mum called me and informed me that dad is showing his "rockstar" attitude back which is denying the nurses to get his blood, earlier he didn't informed mum ( which annoys mum again ) he is scheduled for operation the next day. So from shooting location, i drove to HKL.
Scene3 - INT - hospital room, night.
Dad - bring me back to Melaka!
Me - seriously? You going to be operated tomorrow.
Dad - call Siong ( my eldest brother )
Me - and what? fine, he will bring you back to Melaka with his motorbike.
Dad - ................
Me - you going to be operated tomorrow, you been suffering for 2 years now, so it will end soon, im bringing mum to sleep in my place tonight, you going to be in the operation room if you like it or not......OK?!!
i walked out, approached the head nurse and informed her to get the most effective tranquilizer and wheeled him to the operation theater. Mum came back to my place and snored like bear.
Most elderly patients who was in the same room with dad is strangely behaving the same way, few can be extremely dramatic, majority of them have their hands tied to the bed railings as they will pluck out their IV drips like Weapon X, shaking the bed like a trapped gorilla, singing on top of their lungs at 4am - much to their wife's embarrassment...
few behave worst when they are induced with morphine, like someone found out he woke up on top of another patient. You just need to find ways not to laugh when you listen to this sort of tales.
The very LAST thing people/me need now when it come to times like these is fucking advice. Professional, personal or non-personal. At least send good and nice is text message such as :
1. i hope and pray your dad is ok and well.
2. is there anything i could help?
Again - i do LOVE mum and dad very very much in my own way. Its interesting seeing how the universe matched them, total polar opposites but both of them needs each other - at the same time, can be at each others throat like Tom and Jerry...much to my amusement.I have to pour the crushed medicine pills to my dad's MILO and force him to drink it.
Like my pal texted me, its all like a circle, all of us will turn like a kid back, showing those stubbornness, attention - giving out test to people around us.
to all kids who are in the same predicament with me, i wish you all the best, i know this experience is not wonderful, but HEY....this is the only time we can do, provide and contribute - the most important is seeing them ALIVE. No point crying your eyes out when they leave nothing except their stiff dead cold body.
To all nurses and medical doctors and officers who gave their energy and commitment in dealing with terrible patients, you have my awesome respect.
with this, i end this note with one of my favourite short film of mine, entitled H3R0, based on my pal's brilliant blog article.
May everyone be free from physical and mental suffering
May everyone be free from any harm and danger
May everyone be well and happy
